Protocol YMSGR

The ymsgr protocol is nothing, but a part of the yahoo messenger application. The Yahoo Messenger Protocol or ymsgr protocol is used by yahoo messenger as a protocol which is basically an underlying network to provide instant messaging services. The features offered by yahoo messenger are much beyond the scope of just “messaging” additionally it also offers other features such as off-line messaging, file transfer, chat, conferencing, voice chat, webcams, etc.

The objective of the ymsgr protocol is to enable the use of a language. In addition, it also allows a use of a series of conventions for the software communicating with the yahoo’s instant messaging service.

The communication offered between the client application and a server is by the ymsgr protocol. However, some other protocols may also be used to support some parts of the ymsgr. For example, ymsgr may be initially responsible for negotiating the transferring of a file but later HTTP may take up the job of the actual file transfer. Similarly, ymsgr may be initially used to discover and request the permission to view a webcam but then the actual process of feeding the images is carried on by HTTP, from one client to another. Additionally, HTTP and XML documents can also be used for retrieving the various rooms, lobbies and other chat room categories.

For logging into the ysmgr, the introduction through one’s user name is first required, to which the server sends a response. Thereafter the account’s password is fed into the system to complete the log in process and this goes to trigger response values. These response values, which actually appear as variable assignments, are then sent to the server.
