Protocol MMS

Multimedia Messaging Service, or MMS, is a telecommunications service which aims at achieving the objectives of sending communication messages that particularly include multimedia objects. It may be considered as an extension of the standard sms. As a result, it allows for message lengths which are long enough. It also uses WAP to display the content.

The most popular use of an MMS is sending the photographs, sharing video recordings, etc. Not only this, it is also used for sending ringtones. Acision infrastructure was used to launch the first ever commercial MMS. MMS is included as a part of the 3G networks and will also be retained in the 4G networks which is currently under development.

Certain challenges have been experienced with MMS which may not be seen with sms. These challenges may include those of bulk messaging, configuration of a particular handset, content adaptation, etc. Additionally, there is also a challenge involved in sending the MMS to a large group of people.

The recipient in case of an MMS architecture is primarily responsible for ensuring content such as transcoding of the audio code, resizing of the image, etc. However, this is possible only if this feature has been enabled by a mobile network operator. Additionally compatibility with a large number of mobile phones is also dependent upon the network operator.
